about Merry

Merry Elkins with short blonde hair wearing a denim jacket and red scarf, standing in front of a bookshelf filled with books.

I’ve always been drawn to stories.  As a former journalist and performer, I told other people’s stories. I wrote my own novel when I was seven years old for a school assignment. It was 10 pages long. But I grew up singing and dancing to the recordings of Broadway musicals, too, and was determined to do both for my career.

My first job was as a singer and dancer, performing as one of The Golddiggers on The Dean Martin Show before I moved into print and television journalism, writing for several magazines and reporting for local networks and Entertainment Tonight. I continued to work in both fields, acting in series such as Dallas and numerous TV commercials while free-lancing as a writer. Later, my stint at The Hollywood Reporter gave me a different perspective on the entertainment industry, and on dreams and ambition, and how people and the stories they tell about their lives evolve over time.

Writing became the place where time disappeared and all that I had experienced connected.

I’m drawn to characters at moments of transition, where certainty falls away and something new begins to take shape and alters the course of their lives. The heart of my work seems to be about love, loss, family, complicated relationships, and turning points when people begin to see themselves differently and recognize what that insight demands of them.

My short fiction and poetry have appeared in the three volumes of 20-Minute Stories and in FRE&D. I am completing my debut novel Follow the Sky, a coming-of-age story that explores identity, how we love and the strength it takes to move on from the past.

I am also the co-creator and co-host of the podcast Late Boomers, where my co-host and I talk to people who have reinvented themselves and find new purpose later in life. These conversations remind me that life can be messy and often changes when we least expect it and that it often happens when we’re walking in the opposite direction – and that is what much of my writing is about.

“I’m making a list of what brings me joy, and when I find those moments, the sky opens up and I can grab a star.”

My debut novel, Follow The Sky, currently in development, is about a young woman rebuilding her life from the fault line of grief. It explores unresolved mother-daughter wounds, the allure of an intoxicating yet destructive relationship, and the bumpy path toward finding agency and truth.
